randomly placed war melons on the ground is fail. just to get that out of the way make things for your defences. because just putting them on the ground means they can and will take more damage do to things like a strker run, cannons, and melon strikes <--- can stress that one enoth place you melons on towers of some sort not just the ground. one good melon strike and 50% of your defence is gone.
use walls. not only will this keep ground melons and war machines out but it will by you time to get an army/ war ship to counter it.
make it look good. I say this the because the more props the less chance of the enemy aiming at your spawn. pluse building some props around a barracks or outpost will give it armor so to speek.
make mobile placements. sence you can't place defences at spawn points use deployables like turrets to defend you outposts. droping a flak cannon and some MGs at an outpost can give it a quick defence and make it an easy way to blokade an enemy.
high ground. use it. high ground gives you melons more time vs ground and air attacks ground because it takes more time to get to you and air because you hit them with flak they fall farther down.

randomly placed war melons (at all) is bad. I agree with dark, but I can add that you get way less control over how many melons you spawned, you often get weak spots and weak elements (such as air or explosive attack).
use walls. I agree with dark, exept that it wont keep all warmachines out. However, I can add that some warmachines might get incapacitated by walls, aswell as the really short ones are easy to take care with using wellplaced mortars. Walls could also easy get incorporated in the defence structures. They are bad however, due to the fact that they can block your own melons (use ramps), especially harvesters (use tiberian sun gates maybe?). Also, they are not among the most necesary things, as most attacks come from above, as a rule in the art of war says: "rule the sky and conquer". How about making a bunker for stuff with good accuracy, which would make them protected from mg and fighters and such (low accuracy means hit wall)?
make it look good. I would say that the "look good" would only be good if your enemy would have a hard time destroying art. I agree it could be neat to see though. The armor part fits more into wall part as it is pretty much same thing.
make mobile placements. I agree mobile placement is good, however, there is not often a good use of defending a outpost with turrets you could use to kill a enemys income with. They can also be used to actually attack the base, without all defence shooting the melon itself.
high ground. I agree its usefull, but its really useful for getting a higher range (if lap will make range work like a cone for mortars and such). The high ground is very good to use in order to hit stuff flying to attack from above, and melons with bullets using a falling arc, get higher accuracy. A downside of high ground would be that you might get blindspots you wouldnt have otherwise (right beneath the cliff or tower).[/quote]
